Storm Surfing – No More Battle Bus

For the first time in Fortnite history, the Battle Bus is gone. Instead of dropping from the sky, you now surf into the map on a giant tsunami wave. This is called Storm Surfing and it completely changes how matches start.

You spawn on a surfboard riding a massive wave around the Golden Coast map. You can move left and right on the wave to pick your landing spot. When the wave hits the island, you automatically launch into the air and glide down to your chosen location.

The Battle Bus came back on December 4th but Storm Surfing still shows up randomly in 20% of matches. Some players love it while others hate it because you get less control over where you land.

The Golden Coast Map

The new map is way better than Chapter 6. It’s based on Hollywood and California with sunny beaches and movie-themed locations. Epic nailed the size this time. It’s not too big like the last map where you never saw anyone.

Here are some of the main spots you can land:

  • Battlewood Boulevard
  • Classified Canyon
  • Wonkeeland
  • Clawsy Lodge
  • Beach areas with hot air balloons

The map has tons of vertical spots with rooftop chests and cliffside bridges. You can chain together multiple locations before even getting into your first fight.

New Weapons and Items

Chapter 7 brought a completely new set of weapons. Here’s what you’ll be using:

WeaponWhat It Does
Iron Pump ShotgunHeavy hitting pump for close combat
Twin Hammer ShotgunsDual wielded pumps that shred enemies
Holo Rush SMGScoped SMG that’s deadly up close
Deadeye Assault RifleScoped AR for long range headshots
Vengeful Sniper RifleBolt action sniper for precision shots
Arc-Lightning GunZaps players and vehicles with electricity
Forsaken Vow BladeKatana with dash ability and fast strikes
Dual Micro SMGsTwo SMGs for maximum firepower

Mobility Items Are Back

Wingsuits are the featured mobility item this season. Grab one and glide wherever you need to go. The All Terrain Karts are back too along with normal cars and SUVs. You can also ride in hot air balloons scattered across the map.

Boss Transformations

This is one of the coolest new features. When you beat a boss on the map, you don’t just get their weapon anymore. You get a Play as Boss Transform item that turns you into the actual boss.

Here’s what happens when you transform:

  • You get unique special abilities
  • Your health and shield increase a ton
  • Henchmen spawn to help you fight
  • You keep the boss’s mythic weapon

The bosses you can fight are Beach Brutus, Hush, and Human Bill. Each one has different powers when you transform. Just remember that other players can see you’re transformed so you become a big target.

Crazy New Revive System

Epic completely changed how revives work in Chapter 7. There are two huge updates that make it way easier to save your teammates.

Drivable Reboot Vans

Reboot vans can now be driven around the map. You can hop in one during a fight and drive somewhere safe to revive your friend. Even better, if you throw a downed player into the back of the van, they get revived instantly.

Not all reboot vans are drivable though. About half of them on the map can move while the others stay in one spot.

Self-Revive Devices

You can now find Self-Revive Devices as loot. These rare items take up an inventory slot but let you revive yourself when you get downed. You don’t need a teammate anymore. This is a massive game changer for solo players and squads.

Better Movement When Downed

When you’re down but not out, you have way more options now:

  • Roll to dodge enemy fire
  • Tumble down slopes to escape
  • Sprint faster using your energy bar
  • Use ziplines and ascenders
  • Get into passenger seats or reboot vans

Battle Pass Changes

The Battle Pass works completely different now. You can unlock skins in whatever order you want instead of going page by page. If you really want Marty McFly first, you can work on his page and ignore everyone else.

This season’s Battle Pass has The Bride from Kill Bill and Marty McFly from Back to the Future. There are also six original Fortnite characters like Miles Cross, Cat Holloway, and a new Dark Voyager.

Rift Anomalies

During each storm phase, rift anomalies can randomly appear. These events give everyone in the match crazy buffs or spawn extra loot. It keeps every game feeling different since you never know what will happen.

Epic said they’ll add more types of rift anomalies throughout the season. This makes matches way more unpredictable than before.
