When to Visit Albania by Car: A Month-by-Month Road Trip Guide
Albania is a year-round road trip country, but a very different one depending on when you go. The same drive can mean empty beaches and €20 cars in May, packed coves and premium rates in August, or snow on the passes and fireside raki in January. Here’s how the seasons shape the trip — where to drive, what to expect, and when to book.
January – February: quiet and cheap
Winter is low season everywhere except the ski slopes near Dardhë. Tirana is lively, Berat and Gjirokastër are atmospheric and empty, and the coast is closed but beautiful. Roads in the north (Theth, Valbona) are snowbound; the coast road and the south are fine.
Drive: Tirana, Berat, Gjirokastër, the Vjosa valley. Car: Any; winter tyres are rarely needed outside the mountains. Prices: Rock bottom. Economy rentals at the lowest rates of the year and hotels often half price.
March – April: spring arrives, the country wakes up
Wildflowers cover the hills, rivers run full, and the weather turns mild and mostly sunny by April. It’s the best time for the Osum Canyon (rafting season), for walking in the Llogara pine forest, and for exploring Ottoman towns without crowds. The sea is still too cold for most, but Easter brings a burst of life.
Drive: Berat and the Osum Canyon, Gjirokastër and the Blue Eye, Kruja and the north as far as Shkodër. Car: Economy is fine everywhere paved. Mountain roads to Theth open in late April or May depending on snow. Prices: Still low. This is the sweet spot for value.
May – June: the best months, full stop
Warm days, cool nights, the sea warms to swimmable by early June, and the coast is still calm. Everything is open, nothing is crowded, and the light is perfect for photographs. If you can pick only one window for an Albanian road trip, take the last two weeks of May or the first three of June.
Drive: The full loop — Tirana, Berat, Gjirokastër, the Riviera to Ksamil, back via Vlorë. Theth and Valbona open in the north. Car: Economy for the coast; SUV if you’re doing the northern mountains. Prices: Rising but reasonable. Book your car a few weeks ahead — local firms such as Shehu Rental let you reserve with 10% down and cancel free, so there’s no reason to wait.
July – August: peak season
The country is at its hottest — 35°C is normal inland — and the coast fills with Albanian, Kosovar and Italian holidaymakers. Ksamil, Dhërmi and Sarandë are busy; parking is tight; and rental cars sell out. That said, the sea is bath-warm, the nightlife is lively, and the mountains offer a cool escape.
Drive: Head north for relief — Theth, Valbona and the Koman ferry are stunning in summer. On the coast, go early, go to quieter beaches (Borsh, Bunec, Livadhi), and avoid the SH8 at midday. Car: Air-conditioning is non-negotiable. Book two months ahead for August. Prices: Peak. Expect double the winter rate for cars and rooms.
September – October: the second-best window
Crowds leave with the school holidays, the sea stays warm until mid-October, and prices drop back. September on the Riviera feels like a private version of August. In October the inland towns are golden, the vineyards near Berat are harvesting, and the mountains are in full autumn colour before the first snow in late October.
Drive: Same as May–June. Add the wine roads around Berat and the Korçë region in the east. Car: Economy is fine; SUV for the mountains, which stay open until the snow. Prices: Mid-range in September, low by October.
November – December: off-season, with pockets of magic
Rain increases, the coast shuts, and days shorten — but Tirana is at its best, with cafés full and the Christmas market at Skanderbeg Square in December. Gjirokastër and Berat are moody and empty. The north is closed to most cars once snow falls.
Drive: Short trips from Tirana: Kruja, Durrës, Berat. Car: Any. Check that your rental includes roadside assistance for rainy days. Prices: Lowest of the year, often with free upgrades.

Two rules that apply every month
Pick up at the airport. Whatever the season, collecting your car at Tirana International Airport saves an hour and a taxi fare. Choose an agency that delivers to the terminal without a surcharge.
Choose a local, well-reviewed company. Rates, deposit policies and honesty vary hugely between operators. A family-run business with hundreds of recent five-star reviews, unlimited kilometres and transparent insurance — renting a car in Albania from Shehu is a good benchmark — will give you the same car for less money and far less stress than an anonymous international desk.
The verdict
For most travellers: late May to June, or September. For beaches and buzz: July and August, booked early and pointed north when the heat gets too much. For value and solitude: anything from October to April, with the coast traded for castles, canyons and city life. Whichever window you choose, the roads are open, the distances are short, and the car is the best decision you’ll make.
